Heading to Mexico

December in Mexico is a rich experience. Nativities are in hotel lobbies, houses, and cathedrals. Poinsettias come out on their own establishing this territory as home. This trip will be one to connect us with local musicians to begin an album of sorts— a Tseltal collection of Christian hymns and music.

Mark Garbett will come with us to audition groups and explore collaborations. We are pleased Latter-Day Saint musicians have given us permission to translate “I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus,” and the new hymn “Anytime, Anywhere.” We’ve been working with a team on other public domain hymns for over a year and are anxious now to form a choir to perform these hymns.

Look for live up-dates as we visit this rich and colorful country to do the prep work to bridge two cultures of faith in harmonious song.

Mark Garbett will be come with us to Chiapas -a place he has visited many times before. This time it will be to audition musicians for an album he is making that will be premiered in Los Altos. It will be in the language of their heart. Mark brings with him unique perspective. A composer of scores for screen and artist with his band “The Moth and the Flame,” he has traveled internationally. You will hear the Moth and the Flame songs playing over loud speakers at local restaurants in San Cristóbal de las Casas. While Mark himself plays keyboard, his curiosity draws him from traditional instruments like the Mongolian Morin khuur to the Mexican guitarrón.
